ajaxWrite

A new web based word processing app has been released for public beta. ajaxWrite is an online word processor comparable to Microsoft Word. The app promises to allow users to open all popular document formats and save them to their local computer in PDF, .DOC, or .TXT formats. And because ajaxWrite is web based, the application is compatible across all operating systems.

ajaxWrite follows in the footsteps of the much heralded Writely service which was recently acquired by Google. Unlike Writely, ajaxWrite allows you to use the product without registering or submitting an email address. A quick browse through the ajaxWrite support forum yielded a mix of praise and complaints for a few bugs in the service.

I see apps like this as the next logical step up from Wikis in the vein of online collaboration. They typically bring to the table more robust editing features that businesses require for documents that will be shared with a wider audience. The technology is still relatively new though. So I don’t see any one player dominating the space in the very near future.

Hmm. Looks like the link is dead.

It’s back working now. Good chance they’ll experience quite a few ups and downs as word of their app spreads and folks hit the site to try it out.
