Be A Social Media Consumer

I’m having a very busy week and this is making it difficult to get a lot of my thoughts out on Social Media via this blog. Nevertheless I would like to impart some very basic thoughts that you can surely take to the bank.
You don’t have to be on the publishing side of Social Media to gain some benefit and learn what it’s all about. Consider being a consumer in order to get your feet wet and become familiarized with all the available tools.
You can search a service like Technorati to find blogs on topics that interest you. Do a little research and try to subscribe to a couple of blogs that look like they might be helpful. A few web based readers that you can used to get subscribed are My Yahoo!, Google Reader or Netvibes. Take a look at this previous post to figure out how to identify the RSS feed on a page. And swing by the Social Media Wiki for links to more RSS readers.
And while I’m on the subject, you might think about using a Wiki for research purposes as well. More and more Wikis are popping up for a variety of industries. You may just learn a lot about your industry or the people who patronize your industry. I was recently pointed towards an amazing Pro Baseball Wiki that I never knew existed.
Try searching Google or check out Eastwikkers to see if you can find a Wiki that’s relevant to your business. Many Wikis have RSS feeds so you might just be able to subscribe in one of the feed readers mentioned above.
Your wave of social media consumption just might give you some nice ideas for getting involved on the publishing side of Social Media.
