A Blip On The Radar

Earlier this evening I listened to an excellent conversation between Jon Udell of InfoWorld and Mike Hudack of the Blip.tv video blog service.
Blip.tv is one of the many services that allows people to host and distribute their videos for the very nice price of free. I tried them out in late 2005 only a few months after they launched. I’ve always been impressed with the way the site just worked, allowing uploads of large videos through the browser (as well as direct linking to files hosted on other sites) with nary a blip.
Now I see that they’ve redesigned their site and have added some very nice features for video publishers including encoding to flash, cross posting support, iTunes podcast support and Creative Commons licenses.
Aside from the hefty features it sounds like Blip.tv is taking steps to help support video bloggers in the long run with forthcoming professional services and a 50/50 advertising program. You get all of this and retain copyright over your videos.
Mike is also working on the Video Vertigo interoperability project. I like the Mike’s stated approach to building the service and will be following Blip.tv more closely in the coming months. Have a listen to the interview for yourself and see what you think.
