Reaching Out

It’s interesting to me how creative people are utilizing the new various media tools to build an audience and earn money from their art.

Take Terra Naomi for example. Terra’s YouTube Channel is the number one subscribed musician channel on the site. Her latest video posted just two days ago already has over 7000 views. Some of her videos have over 50,000 views.

Terra’s use of YouTube as a channel for distribution gives a new meaning to the phrase world tour as it applies to musicians. Terra has created her own virtual world tour with her YouTube channel. And she never had to leave Los Angeles.

But there’s more to becoming a successful independent musician than distributing videos.  So Terra directs her YouTube channel visitors to a MySpace page. Because while YouTube does videos very well, they don’t do audio and show listings.

Visit Terra’s MySpace page and you can preview four nicely produced tracks, see a list of her upcoming shows and maybe even become one of her nearly 19,000 friends. Terra’s MySpace profile also encourages visitors to head over to her YouTube channel. And both places point to her website at terranaomi.com.

Once on Terra’s main website you can order her upcoming CD, Virtually, which I’m sure will sell quite a few copies.

Plenty of businesses can learn from the approach Terra has taken to utilizing these various social media tools. Instead of trying to do it all on her website she has utilized multiple points of presence while playing on the strength of each resource.

YouTube provides a major outlet for her video performances. MySpace has the critical mass and tools to continue to extend the connection. And her personal website acts as a home base and point of sale for her merchandise.

The traditional approach to doing business on the web involved creating a single point of presence used to draw in customers. The new tools of the social web demand that businesses reach out to the audiences wherever they may be while using all forms of media.

Is your business reaching out? Or are you hunkered down within the walls of your website domain?
