More Bad Behavior

LibSyn is having a hard time with comment spam. According to the LibSyn blog, “…this is not a problem we are ignoring… but battling the spammers is a full time effort, no doubt.”

LibSyn is a fantastic podcast media hosting service that provides excellent bang for the buck. But they’re not immune to the pitfalls of social media. The spammers are smart and they will always go after the weak links. LibSyn’s blog tool is a weak link.

As far as I can see the LibSyn blog post publishing tool does not include support for moderation or spam filtering. That’s not a good thing for the reasons I’ve stated in previous posts.

LibSyn is actively working on the issue and for the moment has limited the number of inbound links on comments to three. Will that stop the spammers? Probably not. Sounds more like a 10 MPH speed bump.

I am a LibSyn user but I only use their service for file hosting. The public face of my podcasts is typically run on WordPress which has great tools to help protect websites from spam.

My advice to businesses is simple. Always consider protecting each point of entry to your social media properties. Go with a best of breed solution rather than a one stop shop that has holes in their solution. LibSyn’s lack of advanced spam prevention features constitutes a hole in their solution.

So if you want a more secure face for your social media property, consider using WordPress for the face of your initiative while using LibSyn for file hosting and download statistics.
