Asleep At The Wheel

I’ve mentioned the dangers of spam on this blog before, highlighting the pain of some other parties in their efforts to block spam on their social media websites. We’ll I should have taken my own medicine.

You see, I’ve got this site that I call the Social Media Wiki. When I set the site up I made sure to force folks to register prior to editing the wiki thinking that this move would prevent spammers from defacing the site. I was wrong.

Over the last two weeks a couple of new users signed up for the sole purpose of defacing the site. One of the site’s users removed the first round of spam before I could get to it. I promptly blocked the offending user. A week later another user signed up and did the same thing. Once again the same, very nice user caught the spam and obliterated it. Once again I blocked the offending user. It’s time to take further action to prevent this from happening again.

The truth is that this shouldn’t have happened in the first place. That’s because before going live with any social media driven site there should be a robust plan to combat spam attacks. Oh sure I had a plan but it was weak. These sites require a great investment of time and it’s a very smart thing to protect your investments.

With that said, I’m going to devote a few posts this week to pointing out tools and techniques that can help you to protect your social media investment.
