I don’t think I’ve written anything about pinging on this blog yet. So now that Google has added the ability for you to ping their blog search engine this is as good a time as any to write about it.
For those of you not in the know on pinging I’ll provide a basic explanation. Certain blog publishing tools, like WordPress, offer the built in ability to inform sites that your blog has been updated. The sites you may want to inform are those sites that have an interface setup to accept pings. Blog search sites like Technorati, IceRocket and the aforementioned Google Blog Search fall into this category. If you use a feed enhancement service like Feedburner then you might want to ping them as well.
You can also ping a service like Ping-o-matic. Ping-o-matic is a service that will send the notice of your blog update to a wide variety of services that accepts pings.
In short, pinging is a very simple way to insure that your newest content gets the highest visibility possible. And it doesn’t cost you anything!
Of course, you need to be using a blogging tool that supports pinging. Most of the major tools support pinging. The one notable acception is Blogger. If you’re using blogger you may want to use a service like Ping-o-matic, that also allows you to plug your blog address into a form and ping multiple services.
If you do use a service that supports pinging, here are the links to plug in for pinging the services mentioned in this post.
