A Heavyweight Bout

We knew that one day it would come to this. Tech visionary, NBA team owner and blogger Mark Cuban has had enough of being insulted by Donald Trump. So Mark has responded to Donald on Blog Maverick, and in the process called out Donald Trump on his failure to run a good blog.

Cuban refers to talk show host Rosie O’Donnell’s blog, writing that “Rosie gets it.” And then he proceeds to tear in Trump’s own Trump Blog.

Chief among Cuban’s beefs with the Trump blog is the fact that, “Less than half the posts on the front page of the blog have your name as the author let alone are written by you.” After taking a look it appears that just about half the posts are signed by Donald himself.

Mark also takes issue with the fact that there are ads offering, “a 20pct discount on How to Get Rich books and schemes.” There are indeed ads and they do look like the ones you would see on an infomercial at 3AM.

I think that Cuban’s second gripe holds more weight than the first. Authoring by a group is not exactly a foreign thing in the world of blogging. Cheesy looking, get rich quick ads will run many serious blog readers off though. And someone as prestigious as Donald Trump shouldn’t be giving such a hard sell. But then again maybe that’s why he’s gotten to be so successful.

In any case, I take issue with one glaring problem that I see on many blog sites. The URLs for the posts are not ‘clean’. And as such they are very difficult to index by search engines. For example, the link to the most recent post on the Miss USA controversy looks like this, “http://donaldtrump.trumpuniversity.com/default.asp?item=226148″. Not good.

The news isn’t all bad on Donald Trump’s blog. It looks like each post supports comments (moderated of course) and trackbacks. There is also an easy to find archive listing by month. But alas, no searching capability that I could find.

So if I were to school Mr. Trump on how to get himself out of the line of Mr. Cuban’s fire I’d recommend the following. Clean up those nonsensical URLs. Remove the cheesy ads, or at least give them a lower profile. And add a nice little search box to the right sidebar.

These are important tips for everyone to consider. After all, a blog is a means of communication and should be treated as such, with thought put into usability and visability. Sometimes high profile individuals and businesses think that just being able to say, ” I have a blog,” means they understand this new medium. That’s kind of like equating having a car with being a great driver ;)
