Building Your Video Empire

Chances are that if you’re a small business or an individual that you won’t have the time or the money to build out your own video portal. Fear not. You have several viable options that offer free hosting and bandwidth. All of these services allow you to embed video players within your own site so you can deliver your content while controlling your brand presence.

  1. Google Video - The availability of RSS and multi format conversion makes Google attractive. Good flash conversion quality.
  2. YouTube - Poor flash conversion quality. Video gets stretched to the size of their player when embedded.
  3. Blip.tv - Very good flash conversion and a generic looking player. Better stats and publishing tools than GooTube. Good RSS support.
  4. Brightcove - Professional looking players and excellent flash conversion. Powerful tools for managing content. Desktop based flash conversion is a minus.

Since all the above services are free it’s worth setting up an account and experimenting with each service. If your brand is the primary focus of the video portal then I would use Blip or Brightcove as they allow you more generic options for inclusion on your site.
