Tumbling Around

TumblrI’m just getting started with Tumblr after watching Eric Rice get set up over there recently.

Tumblr is a web based publishing tool. It’s not exactly a blogging tool. There are no comments, trackbacks or categories that you would usually have on a blog.

There is RSS and posts that may or may not have a title. There’s also good integration for video and images, though strangely nothing specifically for audio. Did I mention no comments?

Tumblr has one more feature that makes it very interesting. In addition to publishing using their tool you can also aggregate existing RSS feeds into your stream of posts. Now that’s cool! With all over the various communities that we’re involved in, its very nice to have a place where you can pull everything together and then send it back out on a single page, or a single feed.

So I’m experimenting over there with the occasional message and content aggregated from MySpace, Blip.tv, a blog and more. You can see (and subscribe to) the mash over at http://blubrry.tumblr.com.

So far the service is free but indicates that they may add some premium services in the future. I’m not sure if Tumblr supports Google Adsense (I don’t think it does) but that’s probably the thing that will prevent splog types from creating blogs by aggregating other people’s RSS reeds. Time will tell.
