Google Reader Offline Feature Seals It

The announcement of Google Gears doesn’t mean a whole lot to me in and of itself. But this new platform that’s being promoted by Google has already been used by their team to create something I’ve been wanting for a long time.

I now have the ability to cache feed content from my Google Reader to a local hard drive. So I can consume feeds offline (like when I’m on the Amtrak train or a plane) and then resync with my Google Reader account once I’m online again. That means I don’t have to read stories twice or use two separate tools and mark files read.

This is a huge step forward as far as I’m concerned. Combine this with the mobile capabilities of Google Reader and it really seals the deal. Google Reader is now the ultimate rss feed reader.

I should note that I haven’t spent much time investigating how well this works. I love the concept though and will report back if there are any meaningful problems with the new features.
