Vimeo Video Sharing

VimeoI recently started using the Vimeo service to host flash versions of some of the videos I produce for other podcasts. Vimeo provides free hosting and sharing tools for videos.

Like other video sharing sites Vimeo provides free hosting, converts videos to flash and allows you to embed your videos on other sites. Unlike other services Vimeo puts a 250MB limit on uploads per week. This is a pretty high weekly limit so most people shouldn’t have a problem with this. From a business perspective the limit makes sense to me. After all, it has to get expensive to host and deliver all that video content.

I decided to try Vimeo because I’m the curious type and I’ve been seeing folks mention Vimeo lately on their blogs. I also saw that they are developed out of my general vicinity down in New York City. Another favorite video service of mine, Blip.tv is based in New York City.

The quality of flash conversion appears to be on par with Blip.tv and a lot better than GooTube. The major differences between Vimeo and Blip.tv are:

  • Vimeo’s weekly upload quota. Blip has no quota.
  • More detailed stats on Blip.tv.
  • Vimeo has a branded player while Blip’s flash player is brand agnostic.
  • Vimeo’s video sizes appear to max out around 400 pixels. Blip can support larger video sizes.
  • Blip puts the content channels out front while Vimeo’s are a bit hidden.

So which service is better. I like them both for different reasons. I like Blip’s support of larger files for my screencasts. I like the look of Vimeo’s flash player with the capability for people to embed videos linked into the player. Choices are a good thing.
