What PodTech Should Have Been

All Things D

PodTech troubles continue amid rumors and innuendo about collapses and reorganizations. It’s pretty funny watching Robert Scoble trip through the blogosphere slapping people’s hands for not acting like real journalists.

Hey Bob, the real journalists are too busy kicking PodTech’s butt to cover the story. I’ve been following the excellent All Things Digital blog for months now. They’ve got interesting information that is presented in a very intelligent way. They have knowledgeable reporters that people know and respect. And they do video!

PodTech vs. All Things DI keep thinking to myself that PodTech should have been All Things D. But in this case the traditional journalists have severely trumped the highly touted (and now highly distressed) Silicon Valley startup. The graph to the left (click to see full size) shows Compete.com numbers that indicate All Things D is building a huge lead in page views over PodTech. And why not? ATD has a cleaner site design and better branding.

I remember thinking in the early days that PodTech was going to be a cool source for tech related information. It never happened. They’ve been focusing on a corporate level of information that is dry and unexciting to say the least. It seems to me that PodTech needs to appeal to a larger market in order to recoup several million investment dollars while employing a staff of 30 people. I also that a fledgling media operation like PodTech could (and should) be run out of a small office with a handful of people.

No matter. All Things D (and even BITS) are better bets than PodTech for daily news and information related to technology. Maybe the PodTech Entertainment Channel (notice the gnarly non-user friendly permalink) will lift them from the edge of the dead pool. Then again…
